Nothing says summer BBQ
like a juicy burger, but this
cookout favorite can be high
in fat and calories. Thankfully,
there is a healthier way to
indulge: Just follow these tips
from Elisa Zied, R.D., author
of Feed Your Family Right!
Go With the Grain
Select a whole-wheat bun;
it’s higher in fiber than the
white kind, so it’ll keep
you fuller longer.
Top It Wisely
A teaspoon each of ketchup and mustard are
fine, but steer clear of mayo and bacon. Load
up on romaine lettuce, tomatoes, and onions.
Craving a cheeseburger? Use one ounce of
shredded, reduced-fat cheese for a burst
of flavor with fewer calories than a full-fat slice.
Practice Portion Control
Limit your cooked patty to no
more than four ounces—about
the size of a computer mouse.
Build a Solid Base
Choose 95 percent lean ground
sirloin. For a burger that’s even
lower in saturated fat and high
in fiber, replace up to half of the
beef in your patty with lentils or
mashed black beans.
