parents to parents WE HEAR YOU
NO YELL DISCIPLINE
Thank you so much for “You Make Me
Want to Shout!” [December 2008]. It
came at just the right time. There are
days when it seems like all I’ve done is
yell at the kids, and I feel so guilty. The
article helped me realize I’m human
and that other parents yell too.

CELIAC SOLU TION
I almost jumped out of my seat when I
saw the article title “When Bread Is the
Enemy” [December 2008]. It was great
to see you spotlight this condition.
My daughter was diagnosed with it
nearly three years ago, at the age of 7.
Since then, my biggest struggle has
been getting people to realize it’s an
autoimmune disease, not an allergy.
This article will be the perfect thing to
give out to our friends and family.

I loved “When Bread Is the Enemy.” I
have celiac disease, and so do three
of my four daughters. You mentioned
that kids with celiac disease are often
clingy and irritable, but I wanted to

about two weeks if she accidentally
eats gluten. She cries at the drop of
a hat, becomes depressed, and can’t
control her anger. For me, gluten

A VOTE FOR VACCINES
It frightened me to read about the
growing number of measles outbreaks
due to fears about immunizations
[“Measles on the Rise,” Kids’ Health,
December 2008]. Immunizations are
critical for protecting our children from
horrible illnesses. As the mother of an
autistic son, I do not blame vaccines
for his autism. I feel that it is imperative
to immunize your children. There are
alternative immunization schedules for
those parents who are skeptical.

KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE
I wanted to comment on “Baby-Teeth
Tip” [Kids’ Health, December 2008],
regarding Tooth Tissues, which contain
xylitol. This sugar substitute can be
toxic in dogs. Within 30 minutes of
ingesting it, they can undergo a sudden
drop in blood sugar resulting in loss of
